Hair Transplant (FUE/FUT)

Graft requirements vary by baldness extent and goals. Hairline only typically requires 800-1,500 grafts; front and midscalp needs 1,500-2,500 grafts; crown only requires 800-1,500 grafts; full coverage for advanced baldness may require 3,000-5,000+ grafts across multiple sessions. Your surgeon will estimate based on photos and examination during consultation. Individual requirements depend on hair loss pattern, donor density, and aesthetic goals.

Shock loss is temporary shedding of transplanted hairs (and sometimes surrounding native hairs) occurring 2-12 weeks post-procedure, with peak shedding typically at weeks 4-5. This is completely normal and does not indicate transplant failure. The follicles remain alive beneath the surface and will begin growing new hairs at 3-4 months. Patience is essential during this phase. Individual timing varies based on healing response.

Neither technique is universally better; they have different advantages. FUE extracts individual follicles leaving tiny dot scars, allows hair to be worn short, but takes longer and may yield slightly fewer grafts per session. FUT removes a strip leaving a linear scar hidden by hair, provides higher graft yield per session, and is faster, making it better for mega sessions. Many surgeons recommend FUT for sessions exceeding 2,500 grafts and FUE for smaller sessions or patients wanting very short hair. Your surgeon will recommend based on your specific needs.

Transplanted hairs come from the permanent zone (back and sides of head) and are genetically programmed to continue growing for life. They will not fall out due to pattern baldness. However, your native (non-transplanted) hair may continue thinning over time, potentially requiring additional transplants or medical therapy (finasteride, minoxidil) to maintain overall appearance and density.

Many patients achieve their goals in one session. However, additional sessions may be needed for extensive baldness requiring high graft counts, progressive hair loss over time, desire for increased density, or correction of previous transplant. Sessions are typically spaced 9-12 months apart to allow full healing and growth assessment. Individual session requirements depend on hair loss pattern and goals.

Hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during extraction or placement. Anesthesia injections cause temporary stinging for 2-5 minutes. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild, with most patients describing tightness or soreness rather than significant pain. Over-the-counter medications are usually sufficient; prescription pain medication is typically not needed. You remain awake but comfortable throughout the procedure.
