Understanding the Three Insurance Types

Each insurance type serves a different purpose. Understanding what they cover — and what they don't — is key to protecting yourself during medical travel.

Domestic Insurance

Your home-country coverage

Your existing health plan from home — employer-provided, government-funded, or private. Covers care within your country but has major gaps for treatment abroad.

Covers

  • Doctor visits at home
  • Prescriptions and medications
  • Specialist referrals
  • Follow-up care after returning

Does not cover

  • Planned procedures abroad
  • Overseas hospital stays
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip costs if treatment is delayed

Best for: Follow-up care at home after treatment abroad

Typical cost: Included with employment / government program

e.g. Medicare (US), NHS (UK), employer plans

Travel Insurance

Emergency protection while traveling

Designed for tourists and business travelers. Covers emergencies and trip disruptions, but explicitly excludes planned surgeries and pre-existing conditions.

Covers

  • Emergency medical abroad
  • Evacuation and repatriation
  • Trip cancellation / delays
  • Lost baggage

Does not cover

  • Planned / elective surgeries
  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Surgical complication follow-up
  • Extended hospital stays

Best for: Tourists, business travelers, minor procedures (checkups, dental)

Typical cost: $50 – $300 per trip

e.g. World Nomads, Allianz Travel, SafetyWing

International Health Insurance

Comprehensive worldwide coverage

Purpose-built for planned medical treatment abroad. Covers surgeries, complications, pre-existing conditions (on extended plans), and offers direct billing at partner hospitals.

Covers

  • Planned surgeries abroad
  • Post-op complications
  • Pre-existing conditions (extended plans)
  • Worldwide hospital network & direct billing

Does not cover

  • Some cosmetic procedures
  • Experimental treatments
  • Home-country-only coverage (some plans)

Best for: Major surgery, complex procedures, pre-existing conditions, extended stays

Typical cost: $2,000 – $8,000+ / year

e.g. Cigna Global, Bupa Global, IMG Global

Which Insurance Should You Buy?

Your ideal insurance depends on your procedure type, health history, and how many trips you plan. Find your profile below.

Health checkup or dental consultation

Travel Insurance

Low-risk, outpatient visits. Standard travel insurance covers any emergencies that may arise.

Minor elective surgery (LASIK, dental implant)

Travel Insurance Home Plan

Travel insurance for the trip; your home plan handles follow-up care back home.

Major elective surgery (orthopedic, cosmetic)

International Health Home Plan

International health insurance covers surgical complications; your home plan handles follow-up back home.

Complex / high-risk procedure (cardiac, bariatric)

International Health (Extended) Home Plan

Extended international plans cover complications and longer recovery. Your home plan provides ongoing care.

Multi-trip medical tourist (IVF, staged treatments)

Annual International Health

Annual plans are more cost-effective than per-trip policies for multiple visits.

Patient with pre-existing conditions

International Health (Extended)

Only extended international health plans cover pre-existing conditions. Travel insurance excludes them.

Insurance by Procedure Type

Different procedures carry different levels of risk. Here's our recommended insurance tier for each procedure category.

Procedure Recommended Tier Why
Health Checkup Essential Low-risk, outpatient. Standard travel insurance covers emergencies.
Dental (single implant, veneers) Essential Minor procedure with quick recovery. Complication risk is low.
LASIK / Eye Surgery Recommended Planned surgery with specific post-op requirements.
Cosmetic Surgery Recommended Elective surgery requiring complication coverage and extended recovery.
Orthopedic (knee/hip replacement) Recommended Major surgery with hospital stay and rehabilitation period.
Cardiac Surgery Extended High-complexity procedure requiring comprehensive complication and follow-up cover.
IVF / Fertility Recommended Multi-visit treatment cycle with potential medication complications.
Bariatric Surgery Extended Major surgery with pre-existing condition implications and extended recovery.

Recommendations are general guidance based on typical procedure complexity. Your specific situation may require different coverage. Consult with your insurance provider for personalised advice.

Insurance FAQ

Does my regular health insurance cover medical treatment in Thailand?

In most cases, no. Domestic health insurance (including Medicare in the US and NHS in the UK) typically does not cover planned medical procedures abroad. Some international private health plans and self-funded employer plans may offer overseas coverage — check with your provider. We recommend dedicated medical travel insurance for comprehensive protection.

What is medical tourism insurance and how is it different from travel insurance?

Standard travel insurance covers emergencies but explicitly excludes planned surgeries. Medical tourism insurance is designed specifically for patients traveling abroad for planned procedures — it covers surgical complications, extended hospital stays, and post-operative care. This is the key gap that most patients miss.

When should I buy insurance for my medical trip?

Purchase your insurance as soon as you book your trip — ideally 4-6 weeks before departure. This ensures you are covered for trip cancellation, pre-departure complications, and gives you time to review the policy terms. Some policies offer better rates when purchased well in advance.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

It depends on the policy and tier. Essential and standard travel insurance typically exclude pre-existing conditions. Extended/premium international health plans (like Cigna Global and Bupa Global) offer pre-existing condition coverage at a higher premium. Always declare all conditions when applying — non-disclosure can void your policy.

What should I look for in a medical tourism insurance policy?

Key features to look for: coverage for planned surgical complications (not just emergencies), adequate benefit limits ($100K+ for major procedures), medical evacuation/repatriation, direct billing at your hospital, and clear definitions of covered procedures. Avoid policies that only cover "emergency" medical care, as these typically exclude planned surgery complications.

Does HealMatch sell insurance?

No. HealMatch is not a licensed insurance broker. We provide educational information about insurance options and may recommend providers we believe offer genuine value for medical tourists. How much does medical tourism insurance cost?

Costs vary by coverage level, age, and trip duration. Basic travel insurance with emergency medical coverage starts at $5–15/day. Dedicated medical tourism insurance covering planned procedure complications typically costs $100–400 for a 2–4 week trip. Comprehensive international health plans (e.g. Cigna Global, Bupa Global) with pre-existing condition coverage cost $200–600/month but provide year-round worldwide coverage.

Do Thai hospitals accept international insurance?

Yes. Major JCI-accredited hospitals like Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital have dedicated international insurance desks and accept direct billing from many global insurers including Cigna, Bupa, AXA, Allianz, and regional providers like Al Koot (Qatar). Always confirm with both your insurer and the hospital before travelling to arrange pre-authorisation and direct billing.

What happens if I have a complication during surgery in Thailand?

JCI-accredited Thai hospitals handle complications using the same protocols as top Western hospitals — ICU access, specialist consultations, and 24/7 monitoring. If you have medical tourism insurance, complications from your planned procedure are typically covered. Without insurance, hospitals bill complications separately. This is the #1 reason we recommend dedicated medical tourism insurance over basic travel insurance.

Does medical tourism insurance cover medical evacuation?

Most policies include medical evacuation and repatriation, but coverage limits vary significantly — from $50,000 to unlimited. Medical evacuation from Thailand to the US or UK can cost $50,000–150,000 by air ambulance. We recommend policies with at least $250,000 in evacuation coverage. Check whether your policy covers evacuation to your home country or only to the nearest adequate facility.

Can I get a refund if I cancel my medical trip?

Trip cancellation coverage is a standard feature of both travel insurance and medical tourism insurance. Most policies reimburse non-refundable costs (flights, hotel, hospital deposits) if you cancel for a covered reason — typically illness, injury, or family emergency. Cancellation for change of mind is generally not covered. Purchase insurance as soon as you book to maximise cancellation protection.

Do I need travel insurance AND medical tourism insurance?

Not necessarily — but you need to understand what each covers. Standard travel insurance covers trip cancellation, lost luggage, and emergency medical care, but explicitly excludes planned surgeries. Medical tourism insurance covers planned procedure complications but may not include trip cancellation. Some comprehensive policies combine both. Review the policy terms carefully to ensure your planned procedure is covered.

Does insurance cover follow-up care after I return home?

It depends on the policy. Basic travel and medical tourism insurance typically end when you return home. Comprehensive international health plans (extended tier) often include worldwide coverage including follow-up appointments in your home country. If your policy does not cover follow-up care, your home country's healthcare system or domestic insurance would handle any post-return appointments.

Do I pay the hospital directly or does insurance pay?

This depends on your insurer and hospital. Many global insurers (Cigna, Bupa, Allianz) offer direct billing at major Thai hospitals — meaning the insurer pays the hospital directly and you pay only your excess/deductible. Smaller or regional insurers may require you to pay upfront and submit a claim for reimbursement after treatment. Confirm billing arrangements before travelling.

Is dental treatment in Thailand covered by insurance?

Standard travel insurance does not cover planned dental work. Most domestic dental insurance (US, UK, Australia) does not reimburse overseas treatment. However, comprehensive international health plans may include dental coverage. For most dental tourists, the savings (50–70% vs home country prices) are large enough that self-pay is cost-effective even without insurance. We still recommend travel insurance for emergency medical coverage during your trip.
