Before You Travel

Prepare for your PET-CT/PET-MRI Cancer Imaging journey

1

Gather Your Records & Prior Imaging

Gather your previous scans and medical history to share with your Thai hospital before you arrive

  • Collect your previous imaging scans on CD or as digital files — your Thai hospital will review them before your appointment
  • Gather any pathology reports, biopsy results, or treatment history
  • Prepare a current medication list to share with your Thai doctor
  • Share records digitally with Bangkok Hospital or Bumrungrad before you arrive
2

Prepare Your Body

Diet and rest in the 24-48 hours before your scan directly affect image quality — follow these steps carefully

  • Follow a low-carbohydrate diet for 24-48 hours before your scan — this helps produce clearer images
  • Fast for 6-12 hours before your appointment (water is fine)
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before the scan
  • Rest and avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before — physical activity can affect image accuracy
  • Stay warm and avoid cold environments in the hours before your scan
3

Check Your Medications & Blood Sugar

Blood sugar and certain medications need to be managed carefully before a PET scan — get guidance from your home doctor and your Thai care team

  • If you take diabetes medications (insulin or tablets), your Thai team will give you specific timing instructions — follow these carefully
  • Blood sugar is checked on arrival and must be within a safe range — your care team will advise
  • Review any cancer medications with your oncologist at home before traveling — some may need adjusting before imaging
  • If you take blood thinners or anxiety medications, discuss any changes needed with your doctor at home
4

Travel Planning & Scan Day

Practical steps for booking your trip and arriving ready for your scan appointment

  • Book accommodation close to your hospital — Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad are both centrally located in Bangkok
  • Plan for a 2-4 hour hospital visit on scan day, including waiting time after the tracer injection
  • Consider travel insurance that covers medical diagnostics abroad — see our insurance guide for options suited to cancer imaging
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal (no zippers, underwire, or jewellery) on scan day
  • Arrange for a companion to accompany you if you feel anxious or have mobility concerns

Risks & Considerations

As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks to consider. Your medical team will discuss these with you in detail.

  • Low radiation exposure comparable to 2-3 years of natural background radiation (10-32 mSv for PET-CT, 5-7 mSv for PET-MRI); short half-life radiotracer (~2 hours) clears from body quickly
  • IV extravasation (tracer leaking outside vein) occurs in <5% of cases, causing temporary localized pain and swelling
  • Bruising at injection site in <5% of patients; resolves without treatment

Additional considerations will be discussed during your consultation.

Prepare with a Health Screening

Consider a pre-procedure health screening to establish your baseline and ensure you're ready for treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PET scan painful?

No. The only discomfort is a small needle stick for the IV injection. The scan itself is completely painless. You simply lie still on a padded table while the scanner takes images around you.

How long do I need to lie still during the scan?

The actual scan takes 20-40 minutes depending on the body area being imaged. PET-MRI typically takes longer (45-60 minutes) than PET-CT (20-30 minutes). Total appointment time is about 2-4 hours including preparation, injection, the 45-60 minute uptake period, and scanning.

Will I feel claustrophobic?

PET-CT scanners have a wider opening (70cm bore) than traditional MRI machines, and most patients tolerate the scan well. If you have concerns, discuss with your care team beforehand. Mild sedation or oral anxiety medication can be provided if needed.

What if my blood sugar is too high on the day of the scan?

If blood glucose exceeds 200 mg/dL, the scan will need to be rescheduled. High blood sugar interferes with FDG uptake and significantly reduces image quality. Diabetic patients should work closely with their physician to optimize glucose control in the week before scanning. Afternoon appointments are often preferred for insulin-dependent patients.

Is the radiation from a PET scan dangerous?

The radiation dose is relatively low—similar to 2-3 years of natural background radiation (10-32 mSv for PET-CT, even lower for PET-MRI). The diagnostic benefits for cancer patients far outweigh this minimal radiation risk. The radiotracer has a short half-life (about 2 hours for FDG) and leaves your body quickly through urination.

Can I be around my family after the scan?

Yes, with some simple precautions for 24-48 hours. Avoid prolonged close contact with pregnant women and young children during this period. The radioactivity level is very low and dissipates quickly—negligible by 24 hours. Normal brief interactions are fine.

How long until I get my results?

Preliminary results are often available the same day in Thailand. The final written report is typically ready within 24-48 hours. Your oncologist will review and discuss the findings with you, and you'll receive a CD with images in DICOM format to share with physicians at home.

What does 'SUV' mean on my PET scan report?

SUV (Standardized Uptake Value) measures how much radiotracer accumulates in a particular area. Higher SUV values generally indicate more metabolic activity, which may suggest cancer. However, inflammation and infection can also cause elevated SUV, so clinical correlation with your medical history and other tests is essential for accurate interpretation.

Why is PET scanning significantly cheaper in Thailand?

Lower operating costs, facility overhead, and streamlined hospital systems allow Thai hospitals to offer the same advanced imaging at 50-85% less than US prices. There's no compromise on quality—major facilities are JCI-accredited, use the same equipment as top US medical centers, and follow IAEA and SNMMI/EANM international standards.

Will my home doctor accept PET scan results from Thailand?

Yes. JCI-accredited hospitals provide reports that meet international standards. Images are provided in DICOM format, which is compatible with any medical imaging system worldwide. Reports are written in English using standardized medical terminology. Most physicians readily accept results from internationally accredited facilities.

PET-CT and PET-MRI represent the most advanced diagnostic imaging technologies for cancer detection, staging, and treatment monitoring. Unlike conventional imaging that shows only anatomy, PET scanning reveals metabolic activity—cancer cells typically consume glucose at much higher rates than normal tissue, making them visible as “hot spots” on the scan. This functional information, combined with detailed anatomical imaging from CT or MRI, enables oncologists to detect cancer spread that might be invisible on other scans and to monitor how tumors respond to treatment.

Thailand’s leading cancer centers offer both PET-CT and the newer PET-MRI technology at JCI-accredited facilities. Bangkok Hospital’s Wattanosoth Cancer Center operates its own cyclotron for on-site radiotracer production, ensuring the freshest possible tracers for optimal image quality. Specialized radiotracers including PSMA for prostate cancer and DOTATATE for neuroendocrine tumors are available, providing the same diagnostic capabilities found at top cancer centers worldwide. Results are typically available within 24-48 hours, with images provided in universally compatible DICOM format.

Clinical Accuracy Note: The sensitivity and specificity figures cited for each cancer type are derived from peer-reviewed meta-analyses and clinical studies. PET-MRI demonstrates 97.3% overall accuracy compared to 83.9% for PET-CT in direct comparison studies, with 83% lower radiation exposure—making it particularly valuable for pediatric patients, young adults, and those requiring multiple scans during treatment monitoring.
