Khlong Lan Waterfall
Overview
น้ำตกคลองลาน • Khlong Lan Waterfall (Namtok Khlong Lan)
Khlong Lan National Park protects 300 sq km of rugged mountain terrain along the Dawna Range in Kamphaeng Phet Province, lower Northern Thailand. The park’s centerpiece is Khlong Lan Waterfall — a powerful single-drop cascade approximately 100 meters high and up to 40 meters wide at full flow, plunging from a limestone cliff face into a large, swimmable pool below.
Established by royal decree in 1982, the park is part of the Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) — one of Southeast Asia’s largest contiguous protected territories spanning 18,730 sq km across 19 protected areas. Khlong Lan serves as a critical wildlife corridor connecting Mae Wong National Park to the vast Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, enabling the dispersal of Indochinese tigers through the region.
For medical tourists, Khlong Lan offers an authentic Thai nature experience far from the typical tourist circuit. The main waterfall trail is short and easy (0.8 km, 10-15 minutes), making the park’s primary attraction accessible to those in gentle recovery. Visitor reviews consistently describe the park as “one of the best waterfalls in Thailand” with “excellent facilities” and “helpful rangers.”
Important: Park fees, operating hours, and trail conditions are subject to change without notice. Weather conditions and wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Verify all information with the Department of National Parks (DNP) before traveling.
Why Khlong Lan is Special
Off the Beaten Path
Very few foreign tourists visit Khlong Lan. This is an authentic Thai nature destination where you are more likely to encounter local families and school groups than international tour buses. Visitors describe it as “paradise” and praise the park’s cleanliness and the friendliness of its rangers.
Western Forest Complex Significance
Khlong Lan National Park is a key piece of the Western Forest Complex, protecting:
- 300 sq km of tropical forest along the Dawna Range
- A confirmed Indochinese tiger dispersal corridor from Huai Kha Khaeng through Mae Wong to Khlong Lan
- Habitat for Asian elephants, sun bears, clouded leopards, and the critically endangered Siamese crocodile
- Watershed for the Ping River via Khlong Khlung and Khlong Suan Mak tributaries
Easy Access to a Major Waterfall
Unlike many of Thailand’s spectacular waterfalls that require hours of trekking, Khlong Lan’s main attraction is reached via a short, paved, shaded trail — making it one of the most accessible major waterfalls in the country for recovering patients and visitors of varying fitness levels.
Natural Features & Ecology
Landscape
The park occupies rugged mountainous terrain along the Dawna Range, with elevations ranging from approximately 200 meters to 1,439 meters at Khun Khlong Lan peak. The landscape features steep mountains with deep valleys, cliff faces, and multiple waterfall systems, all covered by dense tropical forest.
Flora
| Forest Type | Notable Species |
|---|---|
| Tropical evergreen | Dipterocarp trees (dominant canopy), teak (Tectona grandis) |
| Mixed deciduous | Bamboo thickets (extensive coverage) |
| Understory | Wild orchids (rare species on nature trails), diverse ferns |
Wild orchids bloom primarily during the cool season (November-February), particularly along the Kio Nguang Chang Nature Trail.
Fauna
The park’s position within the Western Forest Complex supports remarkable biodiversity.

| Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) | Vulnerable | Near waterways |
Reptiles: The park is notable for hosting the Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) — one of the world’s most endangered crocodilians. These are extremely shy and pose negligible risk to visitors. King cobras and various pit vipers are present — stay on marked trails and wear proper footwear.
Birdwatching
The park likely hosts 200+ bird species as part of the broader Western Forest Complex (490 species total).
Key Species:

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Khlong Lan Waterfall safe to visit after surgery?
The main waterfall trail (0.8 km, easy) is suitable for patients recovering from minor procedures such as dental or cosmetic work from week 2 onward. The trail is paved with some stairs and takes 10-15 minutes one way. However, the nature trails are moderate to challenging and not recommended during early recovery. The park is approximately 60 km from the nearest full hospital in Kamphaeng Phet, so patients with acute medical concerns or those recovering from major procedures should choose destinations closer to Bangkok. Always consult your doctor before outdoor activities post-surgery.
How do I get to Khlong Lan National Park without a car?
From Bangkok, take a bus from Mo Chit terminal to Kamphaeng Phet town (approximately 5 hours). From Kamphaeng Phet, take a bronze songthaew from the day market on Bumrungrat Road to Khlong Lan village on Route 1117. The main challenge is the final 5-6 km from Khlong Lan village to the park entrance — there is no regular public transport for this section. Options include hitchhiking, walking, or arranging a motorbike taxi. For medical tourists, hiring a private car or minivan from Kamphaeng Phet town is strongly recommended.
Can I swim at the waterfall?
Yes. The pool at the base of Khlong Lan Waterfall is large and generally shallow, making it suitable for families and casual swimmers. Swimming is available year-round, though water levels vary by season. Avoid swimming during flash flood warnings or after heavy rainfall. If you have had recent surgery, consult your surgeon regarding wound closure status before immersing in natural water.
Is there mobile phone signal in the park?
Limited to no signal in most of the park. Some mobile coverage is available at the park headquarters area and along the main access road. Download offline maps before arriving. The park headquarters has a ranger station that can assist in emergencies. For medical tourists, inform someone of your plans before entering the park.
When is the best time to visit?
November is the optimal month — the waterfall is at strong flow from the preceding monsoon, the weather turns cool, and trails begin to dry. December through February offers comfortable hiking temperatures (18-31 degrees C) and moderate waterfall flow. July through October provides the most dramatic waterfall spectacle with full 40-meter width flow, but trails may be muddy and leeches are present. Avoid March through May if you dislike heat, as temperatures can reach 37 degrees C.
Are guides required?
Guides are not required for the main waterfall trail or the Kio Nguang Chang Nature Trail. However, ranger permission and a guide are required to access the top of the waterfall and for backcountry trails such as Phu Sawan. Park rangers at headquarters can serve as nature guides.
What wildlife might I see?
The park is part of the Western Forest Complex and hosts Asian elephants, hornbills, macaques, monitor lizards, sambar deer, and an estimated 200+ bird species. The critically endangered Siamese crocodile inhabits park rivers but is extremely shy. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed as animals roam freely across 300 sq km of forest. Maintain safe distance from all wildlife and never feed animals.
Is camping available?
Yes. The park has designated camping areas at headquarters and at remote sites including Khlong Nam Lai and Khlong Suan Mak. Bring your own tent (30 THB per person per night) or rent one (225 THB per night). Bungalows are also available from approximately 600 THB per night (fan room) to 1,500 THB per night (air conditioning), bookable at nps.dnp.go.th. Book well in advance for weekends and holidays during November through February.
Can I combine Khlong Lan with other attractions?
Yes. Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 14th-century Sukhothai-era ruins, is approximately 60 km northeast and makes an excellent cultural complement to a nature visit. Mae Wong National Park is adjacent to the south. Within the park itself, Khlong Nam Lai Waterfall (a 9-level cascade 25 km from headquarters) and Kaeng Ko Roi rapids offer additional nature experiences.
