Terminal 21 Asok
Overview
Terminal 21 (เทอร์มินัล 21) is Bangkok’s beloved airport-themed shopping mall where each of its nine retail floors transports you to a different world city — from the Caribbean to Rome, Paris, Tokyo, London, Istanbul, San Francisco, and Hollywood. Opened on 11 October 2011 at the Asok-Sukhumvit intersection, Terminal 21 brings the excitement of international travel into a single building, complete with boarding-gate elevators, flight-information display boards, and staff in airline uniforms.
Developed by L&H Property Co., Ltd. (a partnership between Land and Houses Plc and Singapore Investment Corporation), the complex spans approximately 150,000 square meters including the Grande Centre Point Sukhumvit hotel tower above, with the retail podium covering roughly 65,000 square meters across 9 floors housing 600+ shops. It won the 2013 Asia Pacific Property Awards for Best Retail Development in both the Asia Pacific and Thailand categories.
For medical tourists, Terminal 21’s greatest advantage is location: it is the closest major shopping mall to Bumrungrad International Hospital — just one BTS stop away. Combined with Pier 21, one of Bangkok’s cheapest and most celebrated food courts, Terminal 21 is a go-to destination for affordable meals, air-conditioned comfort, and entertaining retail therapy during recovery.
Important Notice: Store availability, operating hours, and pricing are subject to change without notice. Verify current information on the official Terminal 21 website before your visit. Terminal 21 does NOT participate in the VAT Refund for Tourists scheme.

Medical Tourist Guide
Why Terminal 21 Is the Best Mall for Bumrungrad Patients
Terminal 21 is the closest major shopping mall to Bumrungrad International Hospital — the most visited international hospital in Southeast Asia. This proximity makes it the natural daily destination for medical tourists during recovery.
| Factor | Assessment |
|---|---|

| BTS ride time | ~2 minutes station to station |
| Total transit time | ~10-12 minutes including walks to/from platforms |

| Climate exposure | None — fully enclosed, air-conditioned |
| Walking requirement | Minimal — compact floors, elevator access |
| Wheelchair access | Full — elevators on all 9 floors, ground-level entry available |
Physical Demand Assessment
Rating: Low — Terminal 21 is one of the most manageable malls in Bangkok for recovery patients.

|---|---|
| Floor size | Compact — each floor is a single open-plan loop |
| Total visit time | 1-2 hours covers the entire mall at a leisurely pace |
| Surfaces | Smooth, flat floors throughout |
| Elevation | Elevators to all floors (avoid the 36m escalator if mobility-limited) |
| Rest areas | Pier 21 food court has hundreds of seats; restaurants on 4F provide additional seating |
| Crowds | Moderate weekdays, high weekends |
Post-Surgery Suitability
| Recovery Stage | Suitability | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| Minor procedures (dental, light cosmetic) | Excellent | Visit within days. Fully air-conditioned, minimal walking needed. Pier 21 food court perfect for affordable daily meals. Focus on LG (pharmacy) and 5F (food court). |
| Moderate procedures | Very suitable | Use elevators only. Focus on 1-2 floors per visit. The compact layout means less walking than at CentralWorld or Siam Paragon. |
| Major procedures | Suitable for gentle outings | Limit to 30-60 minutes. Use wheelchair if needed. Ground floor entry or BTS skywalk both provide step-free access. Pier 21 offers seated dining with minimal effort. |

Comfort Tips for Recovery Visitors
- Visit weekday mornings (10:00-11:30 AM) for minimal crowds and easy navigation
- Enter via BTS Asok Exit 1 — the skywalk deposits you directly on M Floor with zero outdoor exposure
- Use elevators only — avoid the 36-meter escalators if you have balance issues or are early in recovery
- Head to Pier 21 (5F) for meals — affordable food from 30 THB per dish, extensive seating
- Avoid Pier 21 at 12:00-2:00 PM on weekdays — the lunch rush from nearby offices fills the food court
- Stock up at Watsons/Boots (LG) for pharmacy supplies and medical products
- Grande Centre Point Hotel above the mall is ideal for recovery — direct mall access without going outside
- Bring your passport for the Tourist Privilege Card (free, immediate discounts)
- Pier 21 tip: Load 200 THB on your coupon card — enough for a filling meal plus a drink with balance to refund
Medical Advisory: Always consult your treating physician before any sightseeing activity post-procedure. Individual recovery varies significantly — these are general guidelines only. Listen to your body and rest as needed. If you experience any discomfort, return to your accommodation and contact your medical team.
Practical Tips
Payment Methods
| Method | Acceptance |
|---|---|
| Credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, UnionPay) | Most stores |
| Cash (Thai Baht) | All stores |
| QR code payments (PromptPay) | Widely accepted |
| Pier 21 food court | Prepaid coupon card only (no cash or cards at stalls) |
Bargaining
Terminal 21 is a fixed-price mall — bargaining is not expected or customary. Prices are non-negotiable at all shops and food stalls.
Scam Awareness
| Risk | Advice |
|---|---|
| Tuk-tuk drivers outside | May offer low-fare rides that detour through gem shops — politely decline |
| Transport pricing | Use the Grab app or BTS/MRT for fair pricing |
| Pickpocketing | Low risk inside the mall; standard awareness at BTS stations |
| Counterfeit goods | Not an issue — Terminal 21 sells legitimate products |
Weather Considerations
Bangkok averages 33°C (91°F) year-round. Terminal 21 is fully air-conditioned, and the BTS skywalk means you can travel from BTS station to mall without outdoor heat exposure. Bring a light jacket — Thai mall air-conditioning can be aggressive, especially if you have surgical dressings.
