Asiatique The Riverfront
Overview
Asiatique The Riverfront (เอเชียทีค เดอะ ริเวอร์ฟร้อนท์, pronounced “Ay-sha-teek”) is Bangkok’s landmark riverside entertainment and shopping complex — a heritage night bazaar built on the historic docks of the East Asiatic Company (established 1884 in Copenhagen). Opened in April 2012 by Asset World Corporation, the complex spans 48,000 square meters across 10 preserved warehouse buildings, housing over 1,500 boutiques and stalls, 40+ restaurants, and world-class entertainment venues including Thailand’s famous Calypso Cabaret and the world’s first theatrical Muay Thai show.
Unlike enclosed mega-malls, Asiatique offers an open-air evening experience combining heritage architecture, riverside dining, cultural entertainment, and market-style shopping — all accessible via a free shuttle boat from BTS Saphan Taksin.
For medical tourists, Asiatique provides a unique cultural evening outing with flat terrain and riverside breezes, best suited for patients in Week 2+ of recovery visiting on a weekday evening during the cool season (November to February). The open-air environment means no full air conditioning — patients in early recovery or during the hot season should consider air-conditioned alternatives like ICONSIAM instead.
Important Notice: Stall availability, operating hours, and pricing are subject to change without notice. Many stalls are operated by independent vendors who may relocate or close at any time. Verify current hours on the official Asiatique website before your visit.

Districts and Layout
Asiatique is organized into four distinct districts across 10 heritage warehouse buildings, each offering a different atmosphere and product focus.
Chareonkrung District (Warehouses 1-4)
The cultural heart of Asiatique — Thai handicrafts, souvenirs, traditional clothing, and silk products. This is where international visitors and medical tourists will find the most authentic Thai gifts and mementos.
Best for: Thai handicrafts, silk products, traditional souvenirs, cultural goods.
Town Square and Waterfront District (Warehouses 5-6)
The dining and events hub featuring international and Thai restaurants, the riverside promenade, and the Town Square event area where seasonal markets, cultural performances, and special events are regularly held.
Best for: Riverside dining, events, scenic river views.
Factory District (Warehouses 7-10)
Fashion, accessories, lifestyle brands, and the major entertainment venues including Calypso Cabaret and Muay Thai Live arena. Watsons pharmacy is located in Warehouse 8.
Best for: Fashion, entertainment shows, lifestyle shopping.
Waterfront Promenade
A ~300-meter riverside walkway along the Chao Phraya River featuring the Asiatique Sky Ferris wheel, outdoor dining, and scenic views. The restored Sirimahannop tall ship is moored here, operating as an upscale restaurant.
Best for: River views, evening atmosphere, photography.
What to Buy
Asiatique’s strength is mid-range and budget shopping with an emphasis on Thai-made products, handicrafts, and unique souvenirs — a contrast to the luxury mall experience at venues like ICONSIAM or Siam Paragon.
Thai Handicrafts and Souvenirs (Warehouses 1-4)
The primary draw for international visitors. Hand-woven textiles, woodcarvings, coconut shell crafts, Thai herbal products, aromatherapy items, and traditional Thai souvenirs sourced from across the country.
Thai Silk and Textiles (Warehouses 1-2)
Thai silk products including scarves, clothing, and home textiles. Quality varies between stalls — examine products carefully and compare before purchasing.
Fashion and Accessories (Warehouses 3-4, 7-10)
A mix of Thai fashion brands, independent designer boutiques, vintage and retro fashion, and market-style clothing stalls. Custom-made clothing and tailoring services are available at several shops.
Art and Paintings
Thai artist original prints, paintings, and art pieces are available in the Chareonkrung District galleries. These make distinctive, lightweight souvenirs.
Muay Thai Merchandise
Boxing equipment, Muay Thai shorts, gloves, and branded merchandise — fitting given that Asiatique hosts the Muay Thai Live show.
Jewelry and Accessories
Handmade costume jewelry, silver accessories, and beaded pieces are available at numerous stalls.
Important: Exercise caution with high-value jewelry purchases at market stalls. Gems and fine jewelry purchased at market stalls should be considered for personal enjoyment only, not as investments. For authenticated luxury jewelry, visit department stores with proper certification.
Note on counterfeit goods: Some stalls at Asiatique sell knockoff brand-name clothing, bags, watches, and accessories. Be aware that counterfeit goods cannot legally be taken through many countries’ customs. This content does not endorse or encourage the purchase of counterfeit products.
Dining and Food
Asiatique offers diverse dining options from street-food-style stalls to upscale riverside restaurants, distributed across all four districts.

VAT Refund Guide
Limited VAT Refund Availability
VAT refund is very limited at Asiatique. The vast majority of stalls and small shops are NOT registered with the Thai Revenue Department’s VAT refund scheme. They cannot issue P.P.10 forms or official tax invoices.
Only larger established shops displaying the “VAT REFUND FOR TOURISTS” sign can process refunds.
If You Find a Qualifying Shop
- Present your passport when purchasing (minimum 2,000 THB per store per day)
- Request a P.P.10 form and original tax invoice
- Ensure the form is signed by both merchant and you
- At the airport before check-in: visit Customs counter for stamp (required for purchases totaling 20,000 THB or more)
- After immigration: present stamped forms at the VAT Refund Office
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Minimum purchase | 2,000 THB per store per day |
| Refund rate | Up to 7% (actual ~4-6% after processing fees) |
| Airport refund | Suvarnabhumi: Level 4 Departures; Don Mueang: Level 3 Departures |
| Timeline | Goods must leave Thailand within 60 days of purchase |
| Refund methods | Cash (up to ~$700 equivalent, ~100 THB commission), bank check, or card transfer |
Practical Advice
Don’t count on VAT refund for Asiatique purchases — most stalls don’t qualify. Asiatique’s appeal is its market-style pricing, unique entertainment, and riverside atmosphere — not tax-free luxury shopping.
If VAT refund is important to your shopping plans, do major purchases at department stores and malls (ICONSIAM, CentralWorld, Siam Paragon) where most stores participate in the VAT refund program.
Disclaimer: VAT refund eligibility, rates, and processes are governed by the Thai Revenue Department and are subject to change. For current rules, visit rd.go.th.

Physical Demand Assessment
Rating: MODERATE — Asiatique requires more walking than an enclosed mall but benefits from flat terrain and evening timing.
| Factor | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Climate exposure | Moderate — Open-air venue. Early evening (4:00-6:00 PM) can be warm; after 7:00 PM conditions improve. Warehouse interiors have individual AC but walkways are outdoors. |
| Walking requirement | Moderate — Full exploration covers 1.5-2.5 km. Reduce by focusing on one district (500-800m). Waterfront promenade is ~300m. |
| Surfaces | Good — Main walkways are flat, paved, and wide. Some smaller stall areas may be narrow. |
| Rest areas | Moderate — Riverside benches along the promenade. Seating at restaurants and food courts. Some benches within warehouse areas. No dedicated rest lounge. |
| Air conditioning | Partial — Individual shops and restaurants are air-conditioned, but walkways and common areas are outdoors. |
| Crowds | Variable — Low on weekday evenings (best). Moderate-high on weekends. Very crowded on Saturday evenings and holidays. |
Post-Surgery Suitability
| Recovery Stage | Suitability | Recommendations |
|---|---|---|
| Minor procedures (dental, light cosmetic) | Good from Week 2+ — Evening timing avoids peak heat. Flat terrain is manageable. Focus on one district to limit walking to under 1 km. Plenty of restaurant seating for rest breaks. | Arrive by 5:00 PM on a weekday. Use taxi directly to entrance for easiest access. |
| Moderate procedures | Suitable from Week 2+ with planning — Arrive early (5:00 PM) when cooler and less crowded. Limit visit to 1-2 hours. Use taxi rather than shuttle boat for easier, faster access. | Bring water. Stay in one district. Take seated rest breaks every 30 minutes. |
| Major procedures | Not recommended until Week 3+ — Open-air environment means heat exposure even in evenings. Extended walking required. Air-conditioned malls like ICONSIAM or CentralWorld are safer choices for Week 1-2 recovery. | If visiting at Week 3+, limit to 1 hour on a weekday evening during cool season only. |
Nearest Hospitals
| Hospital | Distance | Travel Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital | ~2 km | 5-8 min by taxi | Closest hospital — government facility, limited English, basic emergency care |
| BNH Hospital | ~3-4 km | 9-12 min by taxi | Recommended — well-known international hospital on Convent Road (Silom area) |
| Bumrungrad International Hospital | ~11 km | 15-20 min by taxi (no traffic) / 25-40 min with traffic | Premier international hospital; also accessible via BTS |
| Bangkok Hospital | ~14 km | 20-25 min by taxi | Eastern Bangkok; best accessed by taxi |
| Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital | ~13 km | 18-25 min by taxi | Sukhumvit area; good international services |
Pharmacy
Watsons pharmacy is confirmed in Warehouse 8, Room H47-H48. Hours approximately 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM (aligning with Asiatique’s operating hours). Basic medications, health supplies, and personal care products available.

Comfort Tips for Recovery Visitors
- Visit on a weekday evening (Tuesday-Thursday) for the lightest crowds and most relaxed atmosphere
- Arrive by 5:00 PM to browse shops before shows start while temperatures are still cooling
- Focus on one district per visit — Chareonkrung District (Warehouses 1-4) is the most rewarding for souvenirs and handicrafts
- Use taxi directly to the entrance rather than the shuttle boat if mobility is a concern — the boat requires walking to/from piers and boarding/disembarking
- Bring water — the open-air venue can be warm, especially March-May
- Wear comfortable, closed shoes — flat surfaces but extensive walking
- Book show tickets online in advance for better prices and guaranteed seats (Calypso, Muay Thai Live)
- Plan your departure — the last shuttle boat back is approximately 11:30 PM; taxis and Grab are available at the main entrance
- Visit during cool season (November-February) for the most comfortable weather
- Bring a compact umbrella during rainy season (May-October) — outdoor walkways have limited shelter
Medical Advisory: Always consult your treating physician before any sightseeing activity post-procedure. Individual recovery varies significantly — these are general guidelines only. The open-air environment and walking requirements may not be suitable for all recovery stages. Listen to your body, rest frequently, and return to your accommodation if you experience any discomfort. Contact your medical team if needed.
Practical Tips
Payment Methods
| Method | Acceptance |
|---|---|
| Cash (Thai Baht) | Dominant — essential at stalls, preferred for bargaining |
| Credit/debit cards | Larger shops and restaurants only |
| QR code / PromptPay | Select vendors only |
Tip: Bring plenty of cash in small denominations (20, 50, 100 THB notes) for market stalls. ATMs are available on-site.
Bargaining Guide
Bargaining is expected and encouraged at market stalls — it is part of the night market culture. Do NOT bargain at established restaurants or retail shops.
| Tip | Details |
|---|---|
| Starting point | Offer around 60-70% of the asking price |
| Target discount | 20-30% off asking price is typical |
| Multi-item discount | Buying multiple items from one vendor gives better leverage |
| Walk-away strategy | Politely walk away if the price is too high — vendors may call you back |
| Key principle | Be polite and smile throughout — Thai vendors appreciate friendly negotiation |
| Useful Thai phrase | ”Lot noi dai mai?” (ลดหน่อยได้ไหม — Can you reduce the price a little?) |
Scam Awareness
| Risk | Advice |
|---|---|
| Inflated initial prices | Standard practice — always bargain at stalls. First asking price is typically 2-3x the expected selling price. |
| Counterfeit goods | Some stalls sell knockoff brand-name items. Assume very low-priced branded goods are not authentic. Counterfeit goods may be seized at customs in your home country. |
| Gem and jewelry scams | Do not purchase “investment grade” gems or jewelry from unfamiliar market vendors. Gems are for personal enjoyment only. |
| Tuk-tuk drivers | Drivers outside may offer inflated rates or try to redirect you to affiliated shops. Use the free shuttle boat, taxi, or Grab/Bolt instead. |
| Pickpocketing | Moderate risk — crowded weekend evenings present typical urban pickpocket risk. Use a cross-body bag, keep valuables in front, and stay alert in dense areas near shows. |
Weather Considerations
Asiatique is an open-air venue — weather significantly affects the experience.
| Season | Months | Conditions | Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot season | March-May | 34-37°C, high humidity | Uncomfortable until after dark — wait until 7:00 PM or later |
| Rainy season | May-October | 31-33°C, sudden downpours | Heavy rain impacts outdoor walkways; warehouse interiors provide partial shelter; shuttle boat may be suspended in storms |
| Cool season | November-February | 27-32°C, lower humidity | Ideal — most comfortable conditions for an open-air evening visit |
Rainy season note: As an open-air venue, Asiatique is significantly more affected by rain than enclosed malls. Bring a compact umbrella during May-October. For a reliable rainy-season shopping experience, consider ICONSIAM or CentralWorld as air-conditioned alternatives.
Cultural Tips
- Thai people appreciate politeness and smiles — a wai (prayer-like greeting) is appreciated but not required
- Dress comfortably but respectfully — no swimwear or very revealing clothing
- Don’t touch people’s heads (culturally sensitive) or point feet at people or shrines
- Tipping is not expected at stalls; 10% at sit-down restaurants is appreciated
- Keep bargaining interactions light and friendly — the Thai concept of sanuk (fun) applies

Historical Context
The East Asiatic Company — established in Copenhagen in 1884 — operated teak logging, rice trading, and shipping from this Chao Phraya riverside site for over a century. The 10 warehouse buildings have been preserved and repurposed as Asiatique’s retail and entertainment spaces, maintaining their industrial heritage architecture. Historical plaques throughout the complex document this trading history.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Asiatique The Riverfront's opening hours?
Asiatique is open daily from 11:00 AM to midnight. However, most retail shops don't open until 4:00-5:00 PM. Restaurants and entertainment venues typically open from 4:00 PM. Some warehouse sections open from 11:00 AM with limited shops. Verify current hours on the official website before visiting, as hours may change for special events or holidays.
How do I get to Asiatique The Riverfront?
The most popular way is the FREE shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier, adjacent to BTS Saphan Taksin station (Exit 2). Boats depart every 15-30 minutes from 4:00 PM to 11:30 PM and take approximately 15 minutes. You can also take a taxi (15-45 minutes from central Bangkok, 100-250 THB depending on location and traffic) or use Grab/Bolt ride-hailing apps.
Is Asiatique suitable for medical tourists recovering from surgery?
Asiatique is moderately suitable depending on your recovery stage. Advantages include evening-only timing (avoids daytime heat), flat terrain, and riverside breezes. However, it is primarily an open-air venue without full air conditioning, and full exploration requires 1.5-2.5 km of walking. Patients recovering from minor procedures (Week 2+) can enjoy a focused visit of 1-2 hours on a weekday evening. For major procedures, air-conditioned malls like ICONSIAM or CentralWorld are more comfortable alternatives.
Is there a VAT refund at Asiatique?
VAT refund availability is very limited. Most stalls and small shops at Asiatique are NOT VAT-registered and cannot process refunds. Only larger established shops displaying the 'VAT REFUND FOR TOURISTS' sign can issue the required P.P.10 forms. If VAT refund is important to your shopping plans, consider doing major purchases at department stores and malls like ICONSIAM, CentralWorld, or Siam Paragon instead.
Should I bargain at Asiatique?
Yes — bargaining is expected and encouraged at market stalls. Start at around 60-70% of the asking price and negotiate politely. Buying multiple items from the same vendor gives better leverage. However, do NOT bargain at established retail shops or restaurants — only at market-style stalls. Be friendly and smile throughout — aggressive bargaining is culturally inappropriate in Thailand.
Is the shuttle boat to Asiatique free?
Yes. As of February 2026, Asiatique continues to operate a FREE shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier (adjacent to BTS Saphan Taksin station, Exit 2). Boats run from approximately 4:00 PM to 11:30 PM, departing every 15-30 minutes. The ride takes about 15 minutes. This is a significant advantage over ICONSIAM, which discontinued its free shuttle boat service in May 2023. Schedules are subject to change — verify at the pier.
What is the best time to visit Asiatique?
Weekday evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 PM offer the best experience — shops are open, crowds are light, and temperatures are cooling. Avoid Friday and Saturday evenings (7:00-10:00 PM) when crowds peak. The cool season (November to February) provides the most comfortable weather for this open-air venue. During the hot season (March to May), wait until after 7:00 PM for cooler conditions.
