Siam Discovery
Overview
Siam Discovery (สยามดิสคัฟเวอรี่) is Bangkok’s award-winning lifestyle shopping destination — a 40,000-square-meter “Exploratorium” that was completely rebuilt in 2016 by celebrated Japanese design studio Nendo at a cost of THB 4 billion (~US$112 million). Owned and operated by Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., it sits at the heart of Bangkok’s premier Siam shopping district, directly connected to BTS Siam station by an enclosed skywalk.
Unlike conventional department stores, Siam Discovery organizes its retail experience into seven themed “Labs” across seven floors, blending fashion, design, technology, and sustainable living into a curated lifestyle laboratory. This innovative concept earned it the World Retail Awards Store Design of the Year (2017) and ICSC VIVA Best-Designed Retail Destination in the World (2018), among seven or more global design awards within two years of reopening.
For medical tourists, Siam Discovery offers an ideal recovery outing: fully air-conditioned, compact enough to explore comfortably in 1–2 hours, directly accessible via BTS skywalk, and notably less crowded than neighboring mega-malls like Siam Paragon and CentralWorld.

Design and Architecture
Siam Discovery’s 2016 renovation by Nendo addressed a fundamental challenge: the building’s deep footprint with a narrow street frontage resulted in poor visitor flow. The THB 4 billion (~US$112 million) redesign transformed the space into “The Exploratorium” with several notable architectural features.

|---|---|
| Central atrium | 58-meter elongated canyon connecting circular atriums |
| Display wall | 202 frame-shaped boxes spanning floors 1–4 with video monitors, digital signage, and merchandise |
| Exterior | Double-skinned facade maximizing transparency while managing Bangkok’s solar heat |
| Zones | 13 experiential retail zones with laboratory-themed motifs (beakers, flasks, molecular structures) |
| Layout | Open-plan design eliminating traditional store boundaries |
| Transitions | Graduated floor and ceiling finishes creating seamless zone transitions |
| Flow | Repositioned escalators running through atrium for improved visitor circulation |

Frequently Asked Questions
What are Siam Discovery's opening hours?
Siam Discovery is open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, including public holidays. Madame Tussauds operates 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM (last entry 7:00 PM). Some restaurants may have extended hours. Verify current hours on the official website before visiting, as hours may change for special events.
How do I get to Siam Discovery?
The easiest option is the BTS Skytrain to Siam station (interchange of Sukhumvit and Silom Lines). From BTS Siam, take the enclosed skywalk directly into the mall — approximately 2 minutes, fully covered and air-conditioned. No outdoor walking required. By taxi from Sukhumvit, expect 15-25 minutes depending on traffic.
Is Siam Discovery suitable for medical tourists recovering from surgery?
Siam Discovery is excellent for recovery patients. It is fully air-conditioned with a compact layout (40,000 sqm — much smaller than nearby mega-malls), elevators on all floors, and an enclosed BTS skywalk connection. The ONESIAM Lounge on the Ground Floor provides a quiet rest space. Pharmacy access is available at adjacent Siam Center (connected via internal walkway) where Watsons and Boots are located. The design-focused atmosphere is notably less crowded than neighboring malls.
How does the VAT refund work at Siam Discovery?
Look for stores displaying the 'VAT REFUND FOR TOURISTS' sign. Present your passport at purchase and request a P.P.10 form. Minimum spend is 2,000 THB per store per day. Siam Discovery also offers a Downtown VAT Refund counter for immediate cash refunds up to 12,000 THB (goods must be exported within 15 days). At the airport, visit Customs inspection (before check-in for items over 20,000 THB), then the VAT Refund Office after immigration. VAT refund is subject to Thai Revenue Department rules and may change.
What makes Siam Discovery different from other Siam-area malls?
Siam Discovery was completely rebuilt in 2016 as 'The Exploratorium' by Japanese design studio Nendo, earning multiple global awards including ICSC VIVA Best-Designed Retail Destination (2018). Unlike traditional malls, it organizes shopping into themed 'Labs' — HER LAB, HIS LAB, STREET LAB, DIGITAL LAB, CREATIVE LAB, PLAY LAB, and ACTIVE LAB. The open-plan design eliminates traditional store boundaries, creating a curated, gallery-like shopping experience focused on design, lifestyle, and sustainability.
Is there a tourist discount card?
Yes. The free ONESIAM Global Visitor Card offers up to 80% discount from 200+ participating brands and up to 5% off Discovery Selection stores.
